History
Edit
The history of China has been documented in ancient writings as far back as 3,300 years. China is unique in world history for its seemingly uninterrupted continuity of development over 4,000 years.
The Chinese have developed a strong sense of their cultural origins and have kept detailed records since the very early times. It is from these records that our knowledge concerning China’s ancient past has come from. China was originally made up of several warring feudal states. These states were first united under Emperor Ch'in Shih Huang Ti (246–210 B.C.). During whose reign work was begun on the Great Wall of China, a first line of defence against the ever present threat of invasion from the West.
In the T'ang dynasty (618–907)—often called the golden age of Chinese history where painting, sculpture, and poetry flourished. Woodblock printing was invented which enabled the mass production of books and manuscripts. The Mings, last of the native rulers (1368–1644), overthrew the Mongol, or Yuan, dynasty (1271–1368) established by Kublai Khan (grandson to Genghis Khan). The Mings were in turn overthrown in 1644 by invaders from the north, called the Manchus.
But by the mid-nineteenth century, humbled militarily by superior Western technology and faced with possible subjugation, China began to reassess its position with respect to Western civilization. By 1911 the two-millennia-old dynastic system of imperial government was brought down by its inability to make this adjustment successfully.

Some hospitals in major cities have special departments for treating foreigners. Hospitals or doctors can sometimes require cash payments, before any medical treatment is performed. The standard of medical care and the range of medications available in China is diverse and is quite limited outside of the major cities. Medical personnel in rural areas of the country may not be adequatly trained.
