Country Description
Edit
Australia is an island continent. There is very little you can say about Australia that is not contradicted some other part. For example you could say australia is sunbaked dry and red, but in the North there is the tropical rains for 3 months of the year. You could also say that Australia is a lonely uninhabited place but sydney has 3,5million people and is one of the more cosmolpolitan and vibrant ciites in the world.
History
Edit
Before the arrival of European settlers Aboriginal people inhabited most areas in Australia. In 17th century Australia was known as ‘New Holland’ after Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon charted the coastline of Cape York in Queensland and a number of explorers after him continues with this effort. In 1770 Captain James Cook landed on Australian coast with his boat Endeavour and claimed the territory for the British Crown. Between 1788 and 1869 Britain used Australia as a penal colony and shipped over 150.000 convicts to this territory. Also free migrants started settling in Australia from 1790s – main reasons being the wool industry and the gold rush.
In 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was established as a federation of six states under one constitution. At this stage the population of settlers reached to nearly 4 million.
The First World War had a devastating impact on Australia, about 60.000 lost lives and thousands were wounded. Even today the Australians commemorate a devastating battle at Gallipoli in Turkey (1915) where a lot of Anzac lives were lost (ANZAC = Australia and New Zealand Army Corps). 25th of April is now a day when we remember all Australian soldiers who have fought in wars since then. During the Second World War Australian forces contributed to the Allied victory in Europe and in Asia/Pacific.
The period after the war was a big boom for Australia with millions of migrants arriving in Australia and manufacturing industry growing. 1960s was a period of political, economic and social change. Australia today is a cosmopolitan multicultural nation.
