Tuvalu is an amazing place, but not a big one. You can see pretty much all of it the moment you step off the plane. The main island is a long thin strip of land, in some places no wider than the road, in the centre wide enough for a small square and a few small buildings. The best thing about Tuvalu is the people. It's a very small, very isolated community, where everyone knows everyone, and if you stay there more than a week then the chances are you will too. They are amongst the kindest, most generous people I've met, proud and happy to show you around their diminutive country. There's no crime to speak of, no homelessness or starvation because most people make do with what they can pull off a tree, either for food or shelter. Most families also keep a pig, and there's also some food flown or shipped in from Fiji. You won't get a very varied diet, but that just adds to the so-calm-time-might-actually-have-stopped feel of the place. I often wonder how I would have fared if I had stayed there...
